Battery Energy Storage—Key to the Energy Transition

Batteries will play a key role in decarbonizing the U.S. electric grid by allowing the integration of intermittent renewable resources, and battery storage projects will be a key area of focus for us in the coming years.  With battery technology providing the ability to store and discharge electricity at will, stakeholders on and off the grid get maximum flexibility to manage power. 

In New York State, this energy transition involves bringing upstate solar and offshore wind to serve downstate demand centers in New York City and surrounding areas. Distributed storage serves the electric grid by storing the energy locally and discharging at times and locations that are critical to reducing reliance on dirty, costly, and inefficient power plants—making the electric system cleaner and more resilient.

Battery energy storage systems (BESS) charge up from the power grid when energy is cheaper and cleaner and export back to the grid when the power grid is overstressed, unstable, costly, and dirty. BESS help makes our power system cleaner, cheaper, and more reliable.

New York State has a goal to deploy over 6,000 megawatts of BESS by 2030, along with clean energy generation goals of 9,000 megawatts of offshore wind and 10,000 megawatts of solar energy. BESS is designed to store wind and solar power when it's made and release it when there's demand.

ConEdison's and PSEG-Long Island's Value of Distributed Energy Resources program is designed to compensate BESS projects that provide power in the places at the times that maximize benefits to the local power grid.

New York City's pioneering Climate Mobilization Act (Local Law 97) supports the adoption of BESS clean distributed energy resources (DERs) by building owners across the city.

NYSERDA, New York's clean energy agency, promotes the deployment of BESS across the state with financial incentives and resources for developers, communities, local governments, and utilities.

BESS replace the need to build and operate fossil-fuel peaking power plants. "Peakers" pose significant public health and environmental hazards to New York's disadvantaged communities. BESS provide clean peak power.
